El dominicano David Ortiz fue exaltado la noche de este martes al Salón de la Fama de Cooperstown de las Grandes Ligas, convirtiéndose en el cuarto criollo en alcanzar esta distinción.

El poderoso bateador designado de los Medias Rojas de Boston superó a candidatos como Barry Bonds y Roger Clemens quienes en los votos dados a conocer el lunes alcanzaban un 77.5 y 76.4 respectivamente.

El Big Papi logró este reconocimiento en su primer año en el listado de elegibles para la inmortalidad, gracias a la mayoría de los votos de los miembros de la Asociación de Escritores de Béisbol de América (BBWAA, por sus siglas en inglés).

Tras 20 años de trayectoria, David Ortiz se retiró en 2016 con un promedio de bateo de .286, 2,472 hits, incluyendo 541 jonrones y 632 dobles; 1,768 carreras remolcadas, OBP de .380, Slugging de .552 y OPS de .931.

Con los Medias Rojas logró ganar tres Series Mundiales, además de resultar seleccionado al Juego de Estrellas en 10 ocasiones. Ganó 7 Bates de Plata como designado, remolcó 100 o más carreras en 10 temporadas y en 10 campañas superó los 30 cuadrangulares, 3 veces los 40 jonrones y en una oportunidad disparó sobre 50 vuelacercas.

Como bateador designado ostenta el récord de las Ligas Mayores de más cuadrangulares (485) y carreras producidas 1,569) de por vida.

En 2006 el Big Papi se convirtió en el bateador con más jonrones en una estación con 47.

Además de David Ortiz, Vladimir Guerrero en 2004, Pedro Martínez en 2015 y Juan Marichal en 1983 fueron inducidos al Salón de la Fama de Cooperstown de las Grandes Ligas.
