Un hombre de 72 años murió a primeras horas de este jueves cuando en medio del paso del huracán Ian salió a vaciar su piscina que estaba rebosando por las lluvias, informaron las autoridades del condado Volusia, en la costa este de Florida.

El gobernador de Florida, Ron DeSantis, dijo en una rueda de prensa este jueves que por ahora hay información de dos muertes tras el paso de Ian, pero falta saber si están directamente vinculadas al ciclón, que tocó tierra en Cayo Costa (suroeste de Florida) con vientos de 240 km/h este miércoles.

Previamente el alguacil del condado Lee, Carmine Mancelo, había dicho a un canal televisivo que las «fatalidades» se contaban por cientos y que había miles de personas en zonas inundadas esperando ser rescatadas en su jurisdicción.

El hombre fallecido en Deltona, en el condado Volusia, puede ser una de las dos víctimas mencionadas por DeSantis, quien dijo hoy además el impacto de Ian en el suroeste del estado fue «histórico» y los daños causados también, y se va a tardar en contabilizarlos.

 

Según la oficina del alguacil de ese condado, los agentes acudieron a la 1 de la madrugada (5.00 GMT) a una casa desde la que una mujer había llamado para avisar que su esposo había salido al exterior y no había vuelto.

Los policías hallaron al hombre inconsciente dentro de un canal situado detrás de su casa y lo sacaron del agua y le practicaron maniobras de reanimación sin resultado.

 

Aparentemente el hombre estaba tratando de evacuar el agua rebosante de su piscina con una manguera en medio de la lluvia y el viento cuando se resbaló y cayó al canal.

Ian, el potente huracán que causó esta semana destrucción en Cuba y el suroeste de Florida, perdió fuerza en su tránsito por el centro del estado sureño de EE.UU. la pasada noche y es ahora una tormenta tropical, aunque todavía capaz de hacer daño con «catastróficas inundaciones» y vientos racheados.

 

El Centro Nacional de Huracanes (NHC) de EE.UU. advirtió de que Ian va a producir vientos y lluvias fuertes y marejada ciclónica en áreas de la costa este de Florida y en Georgia y las Carolinas.

La Agencia Federal para el Manejo de Emergencias (FEMA) anunció hoy que el presidente Joeph Biden autorizó la entrega de fondos federales para los damnificados de Ian en los condados Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Hardee, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Pinellas y Sarasota (costa oeste de Florida).

 

La asistencia puede incluir subvenciones para cubrir costos de vivienda provisional y reparaciones a la vivienda, préstamos a bajo interés para cubrir pérdidas no compensadas por un seguro y otros programas para ayudar a los individuos y propietarios de negocios a recuperarse de los efectos causados por el desastre.
