Se cumplen hoy 21 años del accidente aéreo 587 de American Airlines.

Este 12 de noviembre los familiares de más de 100 dominicanos recuerdan con dolor la peor tragedia aérea para República Dominicana y el segundo peor accidente en los cielos de los Estados Unidos: la caída del vuelo 587 poco después de su despegue del aeropuerto John F. Kennedy en Nueva York con destino a Santo Domingo.

El vuelo de American Airlines salió a las 9:14 de la mañana con 260 personas a bordo, de las que 68 eran dominicanos.

 

El accidente de la aeronave Airbus A300 ocurrió a dos meses del ataque terrorista a las Torres Gemelas en el World Trade Center, por lo que ambos hechos se relacionaron de inmediato en un Estados Unidos que todavía no se recuperaba de las pérdidas, el caos y los sentimientos que despertaron los atentados del 11 de septiembre.

Sobre todo, porque el avión se estrelló en la comunidad de Belle Harbor en Queens, Nueva York, un barrio de clase media donde residían muchos de los policías y bomberos que perdieron sus vidas en el atentado, según reza la placa que da la bienvenida al Memorial que se erigió en honor a las víctimas del vuelo 587 justo donde ocurrió la tragedia.

¿Qué provocó el accidente?

A las 9:14 de la mañana el Airbus A300, que ya estaba retrasado debido a las medidas de seguridad tras el atentado, todavía se encontraba en la pista esperando la autorización del despegue. En ese momento le informan que su salida será luego de un avión más grande, el Boeing 747 de Japan Airlines, para que los pilotos tomaran las precauciones de lugar.

 

En 2002, de acuerdo con los resultados de la investigación, se reveló que el copiloto Sten Molin fue entrenado para operar de manera brusca el timón direccional de un lado a otro mientras sufrían las turbulencias provocadas por el Boeing, sin tener en cuenta la sensibilidad del aparato.

Los violentos movimientos provocaron que el estabilizador vertical de la aeronave se desprendiera, sin esto el avión no podía continuar su vuelo, uno de sus motores se precipitó hacia la comunidad Belle Harbor, segundos antes de que el avión mismo se estrellara sobre varias viviendas, provocando la muerte de los 260 ocupantes y cinco personas más tras su impacto en tierra.

 

Esta razón del accidente, que enfrentó el entrenamiento de American Airlines a sus pilotos y al fabricante del aparato (Airbus Industrie), supuso una disputa entre ambas empresas eludiendo la responsabilidad y lanzando acusaciones, en medio de demandas millonarias por parte de los familiares de las víctimas contra la aerolínea.
