Repatrían a 31 dominicanos que buscaban entrar ilegal a Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico- La Guardia Costera de Estados Unidos en Puerto Rico informó este martes que repatrió a 31 inmigrantes dominicanos que intentaron entrar ilegalmente a la isla.

 

Once inmigrantes, diez hombres y un menor, fueron repatriados entre ayer y hoy, detalló la agencia estadounidense en un comunicado de prensa.

 

El grupo de once inmigrantes fue repatriado después de que la embarcación en la que viajaban zozobró en el Canal de la Mona, en el extremo oeste de Puerto Rico.

 

Los once fueron rescatados por el MSC Giselle, un buque portacontenedores con bandera panameña, unas 20 millas náuticas al noroeste de Isla de Mona, islote de Puerto Rico.

 

Según detalló la Guardia Costera, recibieron una alerta el pasado sábado de parte del buque panameño, notificándole que estaba adjunto a una embarcación virada y personas en el agua.

 

Ante ello, los vigilantes de la Guardia Costera desviaron al buque guardacostas Donald Horsley y un avión HC-144 Ocean Sentry a la escena.

 

Poco después, el MSC Giselle transmitió que la tripulación pudo rescatar a todas las personas de la embarcación zozobrada.

 

Al llegar al lugar, la tripulación del buque Donald Horsley embarcó y brindó asistencia a los supervivientes.

 

«Los viajes de inmigrantes ilegales son extremadamente peligrosos, y estas 11 personas son muy afortunadas de estar vivas gracias al capitán y la tripulación del MSC Giselle», dijo el teniente Charles Chavtur, comandante del buque Guardacostas Donald Horsley, en el comunicado.

 

«Me alegro que llegamos rápidamente y que pudimos ayudar a los sobrevivientes y garantizar su regreso seguro a la República Dominicana», agregó.

 

Por su parte, el comandante Beau Powers, jefe de respuesta de la Guardia Costera en San Juan, enfatizó que estos viajes altamente peligrosos ocurren con frecuencia a bordo de embarcaciones «que no están aptas para la navegación ya que van sobrecargadas, continuamente filtran agua y tienen poco o ningún equipo de salvamento a bordo».

 

Mientras tanto, el resto de migrantes dominicanos repatriados fueron detenidos el pasado jueves a 31 millas (unos 49,89 kilómetros) al noroeste de Aguadilla, municipio en la costa noroeste de Puerto Rico.

 

Según detalló la Guardia Costera, fueron los vigilantes de su despacho en San Juan quienes recibieron una alerta el miércoles pasado de parte de un oficial de la Oficina de la Patrulla Fronteriza estadounidense en Puerto Rico sobre un viaje ilegal 34 millas al noroeste de Aguadilla.

 

Tras la alerta, los oficiales de la Guardia Costera le notificaron a sus compañeros de la embarcación Richard Dixon a acudir al lugar, donde lograron rescatar al grupo de 20 inmigrantes, 15 hombres, cuatro mujeres y un menor.

 

Una vez a bordo de una embarcación de la Guardia Costera, todos los inmigrantes reciben comida, agua, refugio y atención médica básica.
