Santo Domingo.- Los presidentes Luis Abinader de República Dominicana e Iván Duque, de Colombia firmaron este martes una declaración conjunta que crea un área oceánica protegida para la conservación de la cordillera submarina conocida como Cresta de Beata en el mar Caribe, lo que convierte al país en un modelo para la región del Caribe, al ser la primera nación que se acerca a cumplir con la Iniciativa Global 30×30, mucho antes del 2030.
Esta área será denominada Santuario Marino Orlando Jorge Mera, en honor al fallecido ministro, quien desde hace meses trabajaba con este proyecto de conservación.
Los corredores ecológicos son áreas que tienen la función específica de conectar espacios de gran importancia ecosistémica, para permitir el movimiento de las especies que las habitan, de manera que sus poblaciones no queden aisladas y se permita un intercambio genético y energético.
La firma de declaración conjunta entre los dos gobiernos se realizó de manera virtual, estando el presidente Luis Abinader junto al ministro de Medio Ambiente de República Dominicana, Miguel Ceara Hatton en el Salón de Embajadores del Palacio Nacional y el presidente Iván Duque y el ministro de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sostenible de la República de Colombia, Carlos Eduardo Correa desde el país sudamericano.

Al pronunciar sus palabras, el jefe de Estado dominicano manifestó que la idea de proteger masivamente áreas del planeta se consolidó en las Metas de AICHI en el 2010, durante la reunión de las partes del Convenio de Diversidad Biológica.
Argumentó que República Dominicana está generando las condiciones habilitantes para la declaratoria definitiva, incluyendo, la evaluación de las dimensiones biofísicas, paisajísticas, socioeconómicas y culturales, para lo cual ha realizado alianzas estratégicas con la cooperación internacional.
A nivel global y bajo el nuevo marco sobre la biodiversidad y del Acuerdo de París –dijo el mandatario- el país, asumió como compromiso la iniciativa “Meta Global 30 x 30”, la que explicó es una meta estrategia para el sostenimiento de la vida de todas las especies e incluye proteger el 30 por ciento de los océanos del mundo para 2030.
Se duplica el área de nuestros mares territoriales
“Actualmente, la República Dominicana cuenta con aproximadamente el 11% (unos 45,000km2) de sus espacios marítimos bajo protección. Con esta decisión, duplicamos el área de nuestros mares territoriales que son espacios marinos protegidos, sumando 49 mil kilómetros cuadrados a los ya existentes, una extensión similar al territorio completo de la República Dominicana”, dijo el mandatario.
Agregó además que, “convirtiendo así a nuestro país en un modelo para la región del Caribe, al ser el primer país en acercarnos a cumplir con la Iniciativa Global 30×30, mucho antes del 2030”.
A juicio del presidente Abinader, esta área es hogar de una excepcional biodiversidad y concentración de especies, incluyendo especies que sustentan la producción pesquera y ecoturismo, la que afirmó conformará un corredor biológico marino con el propósito de garantizar la conservación de los ambientes de alta particularidad física y biológica asociados al sistema marino profundo de montañas submarinas de la Cresta de Beata.
“Colombia y la República Dominicana, mediante esta declaratoria conjunta, envían un fuerte mensaje que evidencia el compromiso a la acción climática de la región más biodiversa del mundo. Nosotros estamos actuando, es tiempo que todos se unan”, declaró el jefe de Estado al final de sus palabras.
Acuerdo marca un hito
De su lado, el presidente de Colombia Iván Duque al pronunciar un breve discurso consideró que el presidente Abinader es un gobernante con gran sensibilidad por el tema ambiental.
Informó que la firma de este acuerdo, en parte, fue por el liderazgo del presidente Abinader, ya que esto permitió, que se sentaran a trabajar sobre lo que sería un corredor binacional de área protegida.
“Esta Cordillera de Beata, es una cordillera submarina que posee miles y miles de especies. Hoy nos permite decir que la estamos elevando a una condición internacional sin precedentes en cuanto a acuerdos bilaterales”, señalo Duque.
Agregó además que tanto Colombia como República Dominicana con la firma de este acuerdo marcan un hito histórico en la política medio ambiental regional y un nuevo paso en las relaciones bilaterales entre las dos naciones.
Del mismo modo, llamó a los líderes ambientales de América Latina a que se unan a esta voz de unión ambiental “para que sea la ciencia y la investigación la que permitan que nos adentremos a mayores profundidades a través de levantamientos cartográficos, geográficos, biología conjunta y análisis de las especies endémicas de esta cordillera”.
