OMS: variante delta del COVID-19 es la más contagiosa

El director general de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, dijo el viernes que la variante delta del COVID-19, detectada inicialmente en la India, es “la más contagiosa de las variantes identificadas hasta ahora” y advirtió que ya se encuentra en al menos 85 países.

 

En un encuentro con la prensa, Adhanom Ghebreyesus dijo que la falta de vacunas en países pobres esta exacerbando la transmisión de la variante. Tedros describió una reunión reciente que tuvo con un grupo de asesores creado para distribuir las inoculaciones.

 

“Ellos estaban decepcionados porque no tienen vacunas para distribuir”, dijo, y criticó a los países ricos por rehusarse a compartir inmediatamente dosis con el mundo en desarrollo. “Si no hay vacunas, ¿qué compartes?”

 

 

Tedros señaló que la comunidad mundial está fallando y se arriesga a repetir los errores cometidos durante la crisis del sida hace décadas y en la pandemia de fiebre porcina del 2009, cuando las vacunas llegaron a los países pobres después de que la pandemia ya se había acabado.

Funcionarios de la OMS advierten que, conforme las restricciones fronterizas y otras medidas de seguridad pública son levantadas en Europa, Estados Unidos y otros países con altas tasas de vacunación, eso pudiera llevar a un resurgimiento de la enfermedad.

 

“La situación global es increíblemente frágil”, dijo Maria Van Kerkhove, jefa técnica de la campaña de la OMS para el combate al COVID-19. Van Kerkhove afirmó que, aunque los contagios están disminuyendo en Europa, existen muchos eventos desde competencias deportivas en gran escala hasta parrilladas en jardines que tienen consecuencias para la diseminación del virus.

 

“La variante delta, el virus, seguirá evolucionando”, dijo Van Kerkhove. “En estos momentos nuestras medidas de salud pública y distanciamiento social funcionan, nuestras vacunas funcionan, nuestros diagnósticos funcionan, nuestra terapéutica funciona. Pero podría llegar el momento en que este virus evolucione y estas medidas para contrarrestarlo no lo hagan”.
