El exsenador haitiano John Joël Joseph se declaró culpable este martes de haber participado en el complot del asesinato del presidente de su país, Jovenel Moïse, ocurrido en julio de 2021.

El exparlamentario admitió ante agentes de la Agencia Federal de Investigaciones (FBI) que se había reunido con conspiradores antes de que «se embarcaran en la misión de matar al presidente Moïse» en su residencia, según informaciones reseñadas por el periódico haitiano Le Nouvelliste.

Joël Joseph declaró su culpabilidad ante un tribunal federal de Miami en Estados Unidos, luego de que en octubre del año pasado se haya declarado inocente de las acusaciones que lo relacionaban con el caso.

El exfuncionario de Haití fue extraditado desde Jamaica a Estados Unidos en mayo de 2022, para enfrentar acusaciones de asociación ilícita para cometer asesinato o secuestro fuera de Estados Unidos y de suministrar apoyo material que resultó en muerte a sabiendas de que ese apoyo sería utilizado para preparar o concretar una conspiración para matar o secuestrar.

Joseph Joel John, de 52 años, admitió haber proporcionado vehículos y otros recursos para el magnicidio, así como haberse reunido varias veces con los demás conspiradores tanto en Haití como en el sur del estado de Florida, según el acuerdo de culpabilidad que firmó con la Fiscalía estadounidense y que cita la agencia de noticias AFP.

John es la tercera persona inculpada en Estados Unidos por la muerte de Moïse. El país norteamericano tiene jurisdicción sobre este caso porque el plan para asesinato se organizó en parte en Florida.

Los demás acusados hasta la fecha, Rodolphe Jaar, un empresario haitiano-chileno, y Germán Rivera, un oficial retirado del ejército colombiano, también se declararon culpables de participar en el magnicidio.

Según una denuncia penal, Joseph y otras personas -entre ellas 20 exsoldados colombianos y varios haitianos-, participaron en un complot para secuestrar o matar al presidente de Haití en su casa privada el 7 de julio de 2021.

En marzo Joseph aceptó ser extraditado desde Jamaica, donde fue detenido.

El exsenador es uno de los más de 40 sospechosos que fueron arrestados en Haití y el tercero que está acusado en el sur de Florida. Los otros dos son el exsoldado colombiano Mario Antonio Palacios y el empresario haitiano-chileno Rodolphe Jaar.

John Joël Joseph se podría enfrentar ahora a una prisión de cadena perpetua.
