El presidente Luis Abinader declaró el lunes 5 de julio Día de Duelo Oficial por el fallecimiento de Tirso Mejía Ricart.
Mediante el decreto 420-21, el jefe de Estado dispuso que la Bandera Nacional se ondee a media asta en los recintos militares y todos los edificios públicos del país, en memoria del ilustre ciudadano, intelectual y luchador por las causas más justas de la República Dominicana.
Además, instruyó al Ministerio de Defensa a que rinda los honores militares correspondientes al consagrado intelectual.
Tirso nació en Santo Domingo el 16 de junio de 1936, en el seno de una familia comprometida con la educación, el desarrollo y las libertades del pueblo dominicano.
Era hermano del miembro de la Raza Inmortal, Octavio Mejía-Ricart y autor del proyecto que creó el Gran Santo Domingo.
Tuvo un rol emocionante en la enseñanza universitaria, siendo incluso vicerrector académico de la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo.
